Herbie Hancock Wins Best Album

The Grammys rolled out pretty much as expected last night, with the exception of Album of the Year, which went to Herbie Hancock, which ought to make Harmolodic excited!

Hancock was as shocked as anyone, saying, "I'd like to thank the academy for courageously breaking the mold this time. This is a new day, that proves that the impossible can be made possible. Yes we can, to coin a phrase."

Newsweek published a pretty good/funny overview of the whole show here.

The Hancock win was quite cool on many levels, not the least of which was preventing Crackhouse from sweeping.

For me, the most exciting win was the Grammy for Best Historical Album: "The Live Wire—Woody Guthrie in Performance 1949." It involved the epic restoration of a Woody Guthrie bootleg made in 1949 with a wire recorder. Mathematician Kevin Short and sound engineer Jamie Howarth deserve a big cheer for transforming metal-against-something white noise into art Woody would be proud of. Slashdot posted some coverage on that from a nice Science News article.

Man what a GREAT article. I so wish that someone had dragged a wire recording into a Robert Johnson gig. How cool. Thanks for sharing. That Grammy was very well-deserved.

After Quincy Jones announced the winner, he could be heard saying (I might be paraphrasing) "unbelievable, unbelievable that's great!" Amy Winehouse winning had my both us girls at Judakris in tears. I didn't hate the awards this year. -K

I was indeed excited! Coming the night before my birthday, it was a great early surprise. And then Slayer winning another metal Grammy... I'm very happy to see that the Milli Vanilli days are long behind us.
